The Great Lakes Towing Company escorts the USS Freedom off of the Great Lakes

 

The Tug OHIO departed its Home Port of Cleveland, Ohio on Friday, November 14, 2008 and proceeded to Buffalo, New York.  The Tug OHIO then escorted the newly constructed USS Freedom from Buffalo, New York through all of the St. Laurence Seaway locks to Montreal, Quebec.  The escorted USS Freedom arrived in Montreal, Quebec on Thursday, November 20, 2008.  The Tug OHIO returned to Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, November 23, 2008.

 

The USS Freedom was constructed in Marinette, Wisconsin by Marinette Marine.  The Vessel was delivered on September 18, 2008 to the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Gulf Coast and commissioned in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 8, 2008.  The USS Freedom was the first naval vessel to be built and commissioned on the Great Lakes since World War II.  She will be home-ported in San Diego, California.
