Detroit fronts the northwest side of the Detroit River form the mouth of the Old Channel of River Rouge northeast to the head of the river.  It is a major industrial city and the center of the U.S. automobile industry.

 

River Rouge discharges into the Detroit River at the south end of the city of Detroit, about 2 miles above Fighting Island.  Short Cut Canal 21 is the section at the entrance to River Rouge from Detroit River to the junction with Old Channel.  Short Cut Canal 21 avoids the large bend in the old river channel (Old Channel) at the lower part of River Rouge, and shortens the distance to facilities upstream by more than one mile.  The connection between Short Cut Canal 21 and Old Channel has created Zug Island.  All facilities on Zug Island are owned and operated by National Steel Corporation. 

 

The chief waterborne commerce in Detroit is in coal, petroleum products, limestone, steel, iron ore and pellets, and general and containerized cargo.


Port of Windsor, Ontario, Canada

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Windsor with its tugs from Detroit.

 

6-hours minimum notice is required for service in Windsor, along with approval by Revenue Canada.  Requests for approval must be made by a Canadian Citizen to Revenue Canada.

 

Windsor Harbor extends for 14 miles along the Canadian Shores of Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.  The southwest limit of the harbor is a straight line drawn from Fighting Island North light at the International Boundary to the shore.  The northeast limit of the port is the northerly extension of the east limit of the city of Windsor to the International Boundary. 

 

Port Windsor is the third largest Canadian Great Lakes port in terms of shipments.  Cargoes include a wide range of products such as aggregates, salt, grain, lumber, steel, petroleum, vehicles and heavy lift equipment.

 

The city of Windsor has more than 500 industries and is a major Canadian automobile manufacturing center.  Windsor is the principal outlet for Ontario agricultural products; major canning companies operating in Windsor take advantage of the extended growing season and crop varieties.


Port of Port Huron, Michigan

10-hours minimum notice for service in Port Huron is required when placing an order for tug service.

 

Port Huron is at the south end of Lake Huron fronting the west side of the Upper St. Clair River.  Black River flows southeast through the city and empties into the St. Clair 2.4 miles below its head. 

 

Port Huron has four deep-draft facilities handling general cargo, wood pulp, beans, limestone, salt, and crushed stone.
