Green Bay, Wisconsin

Green Bay Harbor, at the mouth of the Fox River at the south end of Green Bay service the cities of Green Bay and De Pere, Wisconsin.  The major commodities handled at the port are coal, limestone, wood pulp, cement, aggregates, and agricultural products.


Marinette, Wisconsin / Menominee, Wisconsin

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Menominee & Marinette with its tugs from Green Bay.

 

12-hours minimum notice for service in Menominee or Marinette is required when placing an order for tug service.

 

Marinette, Wisconsin on the south side, and Menominee, Michigan on the north side, forms a deep-draft harbor at the mouth of the Menominee River.  The harbor is on the west side of Green Bay, about 33 miles southwest of Port des Morts Passage and 17 miles northwest of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.  Menominee forms the State boundary between Wisconsin and Michigan for about 150 miles from the mouth.  The principal commodities handled in the harbor are coal, stone, sand, and salt.


Port Inland, Michigan

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Port Inland with its tugs from Green Bay.

Port Inland is a private harbor of the Inland Lime & Stone CO., built on the lake in front of the company's plant about 4 miles northeast of Seul Choix Point.

 

The harbor basin is protected by a breakwater, marked at the outer end by a private light with a fog signal that extends south and west from shore. 

 

Limestone is shipped from a 900-foot wharf on the northwest side of the basin.  The wharf has a deck height of 9 feet and reported depths of 25 feet alongside.  There is open storage for 200,000 tons of limestone.


Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides tug service in Sturgeon Bay with its tugs from Green Bay.

Sturgeon Bay is a city on the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal midway between Lake Michigan and Green Bay.  The city is an important repair center, having facilities for repairs to all types of size of craft.

 

The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal provides a navigable connection between Lake Michigan and the South end of Green Bay.  A canal has been cut from Lake Michigan across a narrow strip of land to the head of Sturgeon Bay, and thence a dredged channel leads through Sturgeon Bay to Green Bay.  The Lake Michigan entrance to the canal is about 126 miles northwest of Milwaukee Harbor, across the west of Frankfort, Michigan.


Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee Harbor is one of the major ports on the Great Lakes.  The harbor is at the mouth of the Milwaukee River, which flows into Milwaukee Bay, a broad indentation on the west side of Lake Michigan about 80 miles north of Chicago Harbor.  The harbor comprises an outer harbor formed by the breakwalls paralleling the shore and an inner harbor in Milwaukee River, Menominee River, and Kinnickinnic River. 

 

The principal cargoes handled in the port are general cargo, steel products, coal, cement, and grain.  Freighters and Petroleum Tankers ply the year round between Milwaukee and other ports on southern Lake Michigan.


Kenosha, Wisconsin

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides tug service in Kenosha with its tugs from Milwaukee.

Kenosha Harbor, 50 miles north of Chicago Harbor at the original mouth of Pike Creek, serves as a base for commercial fisherman and pleasure craft.


Ludington, Michigan

Ludington is in Pere Marquette Lake, 7.5 miles south of Big Sable Point.  The city of Ludington is on the north side of the lake. 

 

With three deep-draft facilities, Ludington handles stone, sand, limestone, aggregates, and liquid calcium chloride.


Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Manitowoc is a port city at the mouth of the Manitowoc River, about 75 miles north of Milwaukee Harbor.  The principal cargoes handled in the port are coal, salt, and cement.


Racine, Wisconsin

Racine Harbor is at the mouth of Root River, 60 miles north of Chicago Harbor and 21 miles south of Milwaukee Harbor.  The harbor is used primarily by pleasure craft and fish tugs.


Holland, Michigan

Holland Harbor, 63 miles south of Little Sable Point, is formed by Lake Macatawa, which is connected to Lake Michigan at its west end by an improved channel.  The lake extends 5 miles east to its head at the mouth of the Macatawa River and has a least width of 1,000 feet near its midlength. 

 

The city of Holland, Michigan fronts the east shore and much of the south shore of Lake Macatawa.  The principal commodities handled at the port are coal, salt, cement, stone and agricultural chemicals.


South Chicago, Illinois

South Chicago (Calumet Harbor) is 14 miles northwest of Gary Harbor and about 333 miles by water from the Straits of Mackinac.  The harbor is in the south part of the city of Chicago, Illinois, and comprises an outer harbor protected by breakwalls and the Calumet River.  The city of Chicago, including Calumet and Chicago Harbor, is one of the largest inland ports in the world.


Buffington, Indiana

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Buffington with its tugs from South Chicago.

 

6-hours minimum notice for service in Buffington is required when placing an order for tug service.

 

Buffington Harbor is a private harbor owned by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company, and is about 3 miles southeast of Indiana Harbor and 4.5 miles northwest of Gary Harbor.  The harbor is built in the lake in front of the company's plant on bulkheaded and filled land that extends 2,400 to 2,900 feet beyond the natural shoreline. 

 

There is open storage for about 1 ¼ million tons of material, and a retractable conveyor can load vessels with slag at 1,000 tons per hour.  Limestone, bauxite, cement, clinker, and bulk materials are received, and slag and miscellaneous bulk materials are shipped.


Indiana Harbor, Indiana

Indiana Harbor is an artificial harbor at East Chicago, Indiana, about 3 miles northwest of Buffington Harbor and 6 miles southeast of South Chicago (Calumet Harbor). 

 

Indiana Harbor has numerous deep-draft facilities in the outer basin, both sides of Indiana Harbor Canal, and in the branch channels. 

 

The major commodities handled at Indiana Harbor are iron ore, limestone, general cargo, salt, cement, liquid bulk, gypsum, potash, sand and gravel.


Waukegan, Illinois

Waukegan is a city and small commercial harbor on the west side of Lake Michigan 35 miles north of Chicago Harbor.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago Harbor, on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan, 11 miles north of Calumet Harbor, serves the city of Chicago, Illinois, and along with South Chicago (Calumet Harbor), forms one of the largest inland ports in the world. 

 

While there is some deep-draft traffic in the harbor, barge traffic from the Mississippi River via the Illinois Waterway constitutes the major use of Chicago Harbor.  The major commodities handled at the deep-draft facilities in the harbor are general cargo, newsprint, salt, and cement.


Burns Harbor, Indiana

The Great Lakes Towing Company has at least two harbor tugs stationed in Burns Harbor.

Burns Harbor, 14 miles southwest of Michigan City, is an artificial harbor formed by a breakwall extending lakeward from the shore and turning east to enclose a harbor basin and two dredged arms which extend south from the basin into the shoreline. 

 

Burns Harbor has multiple deep-draft facilities at both the east and west harbor arms.  The port receives stone, coals, miscellaneous bulk materials, steel, general and containerized cargo, slag, liquid fertilizer, iron ore, and limestone, as well as ships steel and steel mill products.


St. Joseph, Michigan / Benton Harbor, Michigan

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor with its tugs from Burns Harbor or South Chicago.

 

12-hours minimum notice for service in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor is required when placing an order for tug service. 

 

The port cities of St. Joseph, Michigan and Benton Harbor, Michigan are on the west and east sides of the St. Joseph River respectively.  The St. Joseph River flows into Lake Michigan 22 miles south-southwest of South Haven and 107 miles south of Little Sable Point. 

 

The principal commodities handled in the harbor are gravel and cement.


Gary, Indiana

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Gary with its tugs from South Chicago or Burns Harbor.

 

6-hours minimum notice for service in Chicago Harbor is required when placing an order for tug service.

 

Gary Harbor is a private harbor at the southern extremity of Lake Michigan, about 22 miles southwest of Michigan City and 14 miles southeast of Calumet Harbor entrance.  The harbor is entirely artificial and was developed and is owned by United States Steel Group.  Gary Harbor receives iron ore, limestone and general cargo.


Michigan City, Indiana

The Great Lakes Towing Company provides towing service in Michigan City with its tugs from South Chicago or Burns Harbor.

 

12-hours minimum notice for service in Michigan City is required when placing an order for tug service.

 

From the mouth of the St. Joseph River, the shoreline trends south-southwest thence southwest for about 35 miles to Michigan City.  The shore in this stretch is a moderate bluff for the first 7 miles, thence a range of 200 to 400 foot hills for the next 8 miles, and thence low bluffs for the next 20 miles to Michigan City. 

 

Deep water is within 0.6 mile of shore.  The Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant, 20 miles south-southwest of St. Joseph is prominent.  A security zone has been established in the waters of Lake Michigan off the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant.
